Your Spring Garden Checklist for Natural Pest Control

by | Mar 7, 2022

Before you get started on your spring garden, here’s your checklist to naturally reduce the mosquitoes & ticks in your yard:

March

  • Once the snow starts melting, empty snow melt pools in things like flower pots, bird baths & wheelbarrows:  Mosquito eggs can hatch as early as March, so it’s best to start clearing up any standing water you can find in your yard.  Do this a minimum of every 2 weeks to help stop larvae/mosquito development.
  • Clear leaf mulch: Not only will this also help to clear up any standing water for mosquitoes to breed, but mulch can be another place for ticks to ‘hide’ in your yard.  Adult ticks, which are approximately the size of sesame seeds, are most active from March to mid-May and again from mid-August to November, so don’t wait for the warm weather to control them in your yard.  Bonus points for clearing leaf mulch:  you get your perennials ready for their big entrance!
  • Remove protective plant coverings like burlap once the snow clears: These can also be quite damp and hold standing water for potential mosquito breeding sites.

April

  • Start your garden inside with plants that naturally repel mosquitoes:  6-8 weeks before you plant your garden, start with ones like these inside so they have a head start come spring planting:
      • Basil
      • Eucalyptus
      • Marigolds
      • Lemongrass
  • Continue emptying standing water to minimize breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

May

  • When grass cutting begins, keep it reasonably short: If grass is too long, midges, mosquitoes & ticks will hang there and quest for you.  However, if you like to keep your grass lush and sexy looking,  cutting it more frequently and maintaining a 2.5 – 3 inch height is ideal for both a healthy & pest-free lawn.
  • Continue emptying standing water to minimize breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
